Powers’ Peter W. Thomas, Managing Partner; Hannah Hauer, Associate in the firm’s Healthcare Practice Group; and Madison McGuire, Business Development Coordinator, attended the premiere of Not Medically Necessary, a documentary shedding light on the barriers individuals with limb loss and limb difference face in accessing essential care, especially in the denials of coverage for activity-specific prostheses and orthoses. Peter is featured in the documentary, sharing his personal experience using two prosthetic limbs, while all three Powers team members are recognized in the film’s credits for their service on the steering committee.
The film spotlights the mission of So Every BODY Can Move (SEBCM), a national movement working to expand insurance coverage for activity-specific prosthetic and orthotic care through grassroots advocacy and legislative efforts.
Through personal stories and interviews with patients, clinicians, and advocates, Not Medically Necessary illustrates how insurance limitations can prevent individuals with limb loss and limb difference from accessing the devices they need to move beyond basic mobility. The documentary reinforces SEBCM’s mission to ensure everyone has the opportunity to participate in physical activity, recreation, and everyday life.
From Left to Right: Peter W. Thomas, Powers’ Managing Partner; Kyle Stepp, SEBCM’s National Strategic Partnership Lead; Annika Berlin, Amputee Coalition’s Grassroots Advocacy Manager; Madison McGuire, Powers’ Business Development Coordinator; Hannah Hauer, Powers’ Associate; and Maggie Baumer, Hanger Inc.’s Leader of Enterprise Patient Advocacy
