Matthew Freedus is a Principal in Powers Pyles Sutter & Verville’s healthcare and litigation practices.
A veteran litigator with a nationwide practice, Matthew is a trusted advocate for community health centers and other safety-net organizations. Protecting the rights and interests of his clients, Matthew has a proven track record in administrative and judicial proceedings, including cases before United States Courts of Appeals and the Supreme Court.
Drawing on decades of litigation experience, Matthew provides strategic counsel to mitigate risk and avoid pitfalls that lead to enforcement actions and other lawsuits. Through advice, internal investigations, audit defense, and compliance training, Matthew helps health centers and other healthcare entities stay ahead of legal and regulatory challenges.
On behalf of federal officials and grantees, Matthew has successfully argued precedent setting cases, such as United States v. Denedo, 556 U.S. 904 (2009), Hui v. Castaneda, 559 U.S. 799 (2010), Agyin v. Razmzan, 986 F.3d 168 (2d Cir. 2021), Friedenberg v. Lane County, 68 F.4th 1113 (9th Cir. 2023), and Blumberger v. Tilley, 115 F.4th 1113 (9th Cir. 2024).
Matthew began his career as a Navy JAG officer in Washington, D.C., representing service-members in high-profile cases involving espionage, fraud, negligent homicide, computer crimes, and mishandling of classified information, among others.
